How to get an EPD

An Environmental Product Declaration is an independently verified, registered record of your product's life-cycle performance — aligned with EN ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2. Here is how the process works, from first contact to a published declaration.

The process in four steps

01

Application & scoping

You send your product, category and target markets. We confirm the applicable Product Category Rules (PCR), the declared unit and the scheme that fits your goal.

02

Life Cycle Assessment

An LCA is carried out per EN ISO 14040/14044 and the applicable PCR. You may submit an existing study or commission one from a competent LCA practitioner; verification remains independent of its preparation.

03

Verification & inspection

An independent verifier reviews the LCA and draft EPD against the applicable rules. Schemes that require extended assurance also include a manufacturing-site inspection. The certification decision is made by a competent person who did not perform the verification or inspection for that declaration.

04

Registration & publication

The approved EPD is given a registration number and published in the public register — visible to architects, specifiers and procurement teams. The standard validity period is five years from issue; specific schemes may be shorter.

What you need to prepare

  • a clear definition of the product and its intended use;
  • the product composition and a description of the manufacturing process;
  • primary data from your plant (energy, materials, transport, waste) for the reference year;
  • the relevant product standard (e.g. EN …);
  • a contact person for technical questions during verification.

No LCA yet? That is a normal starting point. The programme provides the data requirements and a structured inventory form; the LCA is prepared separately from its verification.

Why EPD Poland

  • Standard-compliant — EN ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2, the European core rules.
  • Prepared for assessment — clear standards, scope and verification evidence for project assessors and procurement teams.
  • Independently verified — checked by a third party, never self-declared.
  • Defined operator model — EPD Poland is a voluntary programme operated by Multicert. Multicert's separate construction-product certification activity is PCA-accredited (AC 210; ISO/IEC 17065).
  • Efficient & direct — a focused process, in English.

What an EPD costs

There is no single list price — an EPD is scoped to your product. The cost depends on:

  • How many products are in scope — a single declaration, or a series that shares one Product Category Rule;
  • Whether an LCA already exists — supply your own, or have it built from your technical data;
  • Data readiness — how complete your plant data is (energy, materials, transport, waste) for the reference year;
  • Product and supply-chain complexity — more inputs and processes mean more modelling.
You get a fixed quote after the scoping step — once the product, the applicable PCR and the LCA situation are clear. Send your product details for a quote — there is no charge to scope and price your EPD.

How long it takes

The schedule is confirmed after scoping because data readiness, product complexity and the selected EPD scheme affect the work:

  • Scope-basedApplication & scopingConfirm the PCR, declared unit, target market and scheme.
  • Project-specificLife Cycle AssessmentDriven mainly by the completeness of primary data and the complexity of the product system.
  • 15 working days*Document reviewThe GPI review period starts once the complete documentation has been submitted.
  • After approvalRegistration & publicationThe registration number is assigned and the approved EPD is published in the register.

* Under GPI v6.0 clause 3.7, the document review normally takes 15 working days and may be extended to 25 working days. This period does not include preparation of the LCA, correction of nonconformities, an inspection required by the selected scheme or time needed to collect missing data.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an EPD cost?
There is no fixed list price — the cost is scoped to your product. The main drivers are how many products are in scope, whether a Life Cycle Assessment already exists or has to be built, how ready your plant data is, and the complexity of the product. You receive a fixed quote after the scoping step; scoping and pricing are free.
How long does it take to get an EPD?
The total schedule is confirmed after scoping. Under GPI v6.0 clause 3.7, the document review normally takes 15 working days after complete documentation is submitted and may be extended to 25 working days. Preparation of the LCA, collection of missing data, corrections and any required inspection are additional.
Do I need to have an LCA before I start?
No. Starting without an LCA is common. The programme provides the data requirements and a structured inventory form. You may submit an existing study or commission one from a competent LCA practitioner; preparation remains separate from verification.
How long is an EPD valid?
The standard validity period is five years from the date of issue. Project EPDs, Design Phase EPDs and some extended schemes have shorter validity periods. A material change to the product or manufacturing process may require reassessment.
Is an EPD from EPD Poland recognised in BREEAM, LEED and DGNB?
They can be used as evidence where the project scheme accepts the applicable EPD type and programme. Acceptance is assessed under the current BREEAM, LEED or DGNB rules and the requirements of the specific project. We confirm the intended use during scoping.
Can I use a Polish-issued EPD in other countries?
Often, but not automatically. EN 15804+A2 provides common European calculation and reporting rules, while some countries, databases, tenders and assessment schemes impose additional national or programme-specific requirements. Tell us the target market before the work starts so we can identify the applicable route.
What is the difference between an EPD and a product carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint reports a single indicator — global warming potential (GWP). An EPD is a full, multi-indicator life-cycle declaration (Type III per ISO 14025) that is independently verified and published. It includes GWP alongside other environmental indicators across the product life cycle.
Can one EPD cover several products?
Yes. Products that share the same Product Category Rule and are sufficiently similar can be grouped into one declaration — for example an average or representative EPD for a product family. We confirm this during scoping.
