Which standard applies to EPDs for electrical equipment?
Electrical and electronic products follow IEC 63366 and EN 50693 as product-category rules, with ISO 14025 governing the declaration and its independent verification. For high-voltage switchgear the product-specific rules of IEC TS 62271-320 apply in addition.
Can one EPD cover several configurations of a switchgear panel?
Usually yes. Configurable products are declared through a representative product or a declared range, provided the product-category rules allow it. We confirm the grouping during scoping, before data collection starts, because it decides both the cost and what the declaration may state.
We already track carbon per component in our production system. Is that enough?
It is a useful starting point but not sufficient on its own. An EPD covers more than carbon — acidification, eutrophication, water use and resource use among others — and the calculation has to follow the product-category rules rather than sector-average cost factors. Existing component data usually shortens the work rather than replacing it.
What do you need from us to start?
A bill of materials with masses, the energy used in manufacturing, transport of purchased components, the reference service life required by the tender, and any supplier EPDs you already hold.
